Photography is my second career. From 1998 to 2011, I was a music teacher in grades K-6. Starting my career in Texas and then moving to San Diego, I encountered kids from a variety of backgrounds, family situations, and abilities.
I have retained that love of connecting with kids and helping them feel welcome, accepted and important, even if it's just for a few seconds in front of my camera. Letting them be silly, make a funny face, or even letting them *not* smile can help them see that who they are matters to me.
I picked up my first "real" camera in 2011 to take better photos of my own kids. Little did I know that it would also help me start my new career as a photographer.
My business, my family and me personally are also allies. I truly believe that all kids are worthy of having their photo taken, and that they should show up in whatever way works for them. I have a new pin that I will be wearing to all of my schools that simply says, "You can be yourself with me." It's my own way of showing kids, no matter their age, that I'm glad they are here, and they are safe with me. This also works well for teachers and staff who are members of the LGBTQIA+ community. I'm here for everyone.
